Just
a few more days till 2010
Dear
Reader!
Could it be? 2009 is just about to end? But looking back clearly
reveals: it was an exciting year for the Semantic Web. Remember
the Open Data initiaves from the US
and UK
governements as well as the New
York Times, Drupal's
step towards Semantic Web and DERI's data aggregator SIG.MA,
to name just a few.
And what is to expect for 2010? From our perspective media industries
and advertisers will continue to build business around the Semantic
Web. We will see a lot more open data bubbles, fuelling the Open
Data Cloud and bringing the idea of Linked Data to the corporate
world.
So let us thank you for your loyality, faith and support! We wish
you enjoyable holidays and an untroubled new year.
With best regards,
Your Semantic Web Company

Social
Networking and Web 3.0
'If Facebook was a country, it will be fourth largest in the world'.
Such is the volume and usage of social networking sites among organizations.
While some companies use Linkedin to find prospective employees,
others use Twitter or other social network to capture new customers.
The potentials of social networks have become clear to companies,
and thus is the adoption of multiple social networks by organizations
for purposes ranging from collaboration to promotion of their brands.
Here, we take a look at some of the upcoming trends and technologies
in social networking, and how is Web 3.0 going to change the landscape.

Legal
issues could impede the march of the Semantic Web
Speaking at an event hosted by the Irish Software Association, the
Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) and Mason Hayes+Curran
today, Philip Nolan, partner at business law firm Mason Hayes+Curran,
outlined the legal and business issues relating to the Semantic
Web, the next evolution of the World Wide Web. Legal challenges
around the area of data protection and defamation are likely to
raise their head with the arrival of the Semantic Web, the next
version of the World Wide Web, or Web 3.0 to some.

Britain
looks to take Data.gov concept to the next level
The essential idea of www.data.gov.uk is based on the same one as
Data.gov: Make government data accessible and available for reuse
through a single Web portal. However, the British version, developed
by Web founder Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Nigel Shadbolt of the University
of Southampton, could leapfrog Data.gov in one respect: its use
of Semantic Web technology, something Berners-Lee recently encouraged
the stateside Data.gov developers to pursue.

IPTC G2-Standards Add Power to the News Exchange
The IPTC G2-family of standards provides text and multimedia formats
that are designed to make news exchange faster, cheaper and more
accurate. The three IPTC G2-Standards (NewsML-G2, EventsML-G2 and
SportsML-G2) form a unified XML structure to encapsulate different
types of news; a rich suite of metadata is also available. The design
makes the standards compatible with the Semantic Web.

Klout Comes Influence: Measuring And Modifying List Authority on
Twitter
Measuring individual influence in Social Media is as coveted as
it is elusive. While many tools claim to calculate authority, it
is the definition of influence that requires clarification in order
to grasp the relevance and differences of existing tools and services.
Essentially, Klout measures influence at the topical level, sorting
individuals who demonstrate the ability to drive action within respective
social graphs when discussing particular subjects.

The Future of Taxonomy (and Taxonomists) in the Enterprise
After having attended this year’s Taxonomy
Bootcamp, I’ve come away with 2 conclusions about my fellow
taxonomy professionals: First, professionally, we are in a great
position, and secondly, we need to make some changes to take advantage
of it.

Word: Bing Is ‘Dumbing Down’ Search
Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) rolled out yet another update to Bing this
week, which adds “entity cards” for some common queries
that include basic data automatically pulled from third-party sources.
(A search for “Harvard College,” for instance, would
include a box of information on the university, including its location
and acceptance rate, above the regular results.) This follows other
Bing initiatives that have streamlined search results; search for
“UPS” in Bing, for instance, and only a listing for
the UPS website shows up among the results.

Future Is All About Context: The Pragmatic Web
The semantic Web has long been heralded as the future of the Web.
Proponents have said that Web experiences will some day become more
meaningful and relevant based on the AI-esque computational power
of natural-language processing (NLP) and structured data that is
understandable by machines for interpretation. Rather, meaningful
and relevant experiences now are born out of the context of our
identities and social graph: the pragmatics, or contextual meaning,
of our online identities. My Web experience becomes more meaningful
and relevant to me when it is layered with contextual social data
based on my identity. This is the pragmatic Web.
