Happy
Birthday, World Wide Web!
Dear
Reader !
20 years and still growing! The World Wide Web - one of the most
astonishing phenomena in media history - has celebrated its 20th
anniversary this month. Invented in March 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee
and his colleagues at the CERN in Switzerland the web has profoundly
altered the way we used to communicate, connect and inform each
other.
But although 20 years of age it seems that the web's state of maturity
has just begun, taken the fact, that Tim Berners Lee first drafted
his ideas about the Semantic Web back in 1994. And looking at the
current developments i.e. in the search market, it seems obvious
that the future of the web will be semantic.
In this respect: live long and prosper, World Wide Web!
With best regards,
The Semantic Web Company

Search goes Open Source
The Open Source Initiative, SMILA "SeMantic Information Logistics
Architecture", was mutually launched at the end of 2007 by
empolis, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence
(DFKI) and brox IT Solutions GmbH to create a standardized infrastructure
for information management. The project is embedded into the work
of the eclipse community, which consists of more than 180 companies
and research institutions, which all have the common objective of
developing open and standardized platforms. Since June 2008, SMILA
attained the status of an official eclipse project and is co-funded
through the THESEUS project by the German Federal Ministry of Economics
and Technology.

Once
in the net, forever in the net? (ORF, Newton)
On February 28th Tassilo Pellegrini and Andreas Blumauer had a TV-interview
on how social media affects our lives, especially on how the user
can make sure that private data won´t be used improperly,
e.g. by certain internet providers. So the current discussion about
Facebook's privacy policy in the course that they are allowed to
hand over all personal data to any other third party are also discussed
in this episode, like the fact that the internet has definitely
a long-term memory. And that for all contents it is to say: Once
in the net, forever in the net.

Financial Times Launches Its Own Business News Search Engine
The Financial Times Group, which is owned by the British publisher
Pearson, is not exactly the place you’d expect to find the
latest search engine. But a startup deep within the bowels of the
organization called FT Search is launching one at 8PM ET tonight
called Newssift. It is a semantic search engine that sifts through
business news, and it is not half bad, especially for bigger companies
and broader topics.

Open-Xchange
to Launch Open Data Cloud
Data and personal content exists in many different silos across
the Internet, amd getting them all into a single interface and sharing
them is no easy task. One potential solution to the problem is set
to be demonstrated next week by open source software vendor Open-Xchange
with an approach that uses semantic microformats as a mechanism
for sharing and publishing data in a collaborative manner.

Semantic
Intelligence - The Next-Generation of Business Intelligence
Most people think of traditional business intelligence (BI) as a
collection of business-critical information from inside the enterprise.
However, consumer comments, independent reviews, and market reports
online are crucial pieces of information coming from the outside
that infinitely affect any organization. Applications, blogs, social
networks, and forums where content creation, sharing, and understanding
takes place should be part of business intelligence. Locating and
analyzing this unstructured data can only be carried out with a
different kind of business intelligence solution - one we call semantic
intelligence.

Lists Intelligent Virtual Agents, a Semantic Web Application by
Botégo, one of the Emerging Technologies of 2009
The new issue of Technology Review Magazine published by MIT listed
Intelligent Virtual Agents as one of the 10 emerging technologies
of 2009. Intelligent virtual agents are able to interact intelligently
with users, reduce support costs, encourage self-service and customer
loyalty, and serve as a branding tool for the enterprise. They provide
a unique, interactive and personal way for users to get answers
and assistance on your website, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Google Implements ‘Orion’ Technology, Improves Search
Refinements
Google is announcing two changes to search results this morning.
The first involves the use of longer “snippets” (text
extracts containing the keywords) when users input queries of three
words or more. The objective is to provide more context to help
the user determine if the site is worth visiting. Many search engines
have attempted to address this same problem with visual tools or
“previews” of one sort or another. (Vanessa will postscript
with more detail about snippets.)

Obama’s Groundbreaking use of the Semantic Web
In a revolutionary move, Obama’s administration is set to
utilise next generation web technologies to bring an unprecedented
level of transparency to government. In this case it will shed light
on how the roughly US $800 billion dollar economic stimulus will
be spent. The recently launched recovery.gov website (powered by
nothing other then Drupal) brought with it the promise that citizens
would be able to view where the money was going and how it was going
to be spent.

Semantic Web: A Treasure Trove for Marketers
What is the semantic web, you wonder? Don't worry, you're not alone.
The term "semantic web," or "Web 3.0" as some
folks have started calling it, means different things to different
people. In this post, we'll clarify what it is and why we think
it will play an important role in the world of marketing. Two technologies
in particular (natural-language search and content enhancement)
promise to bring companies much closer to their customers and deliver
to consumers more relevant content than ever before.

Sunday,

The vision of the Semantic Web is to enhance today's Web by exploiting
machine-processable metadata. The explicit representation of the
semantics of data, enriched with domain theories (ontologies), will
enable a web that provides a qualitatively new level of service.
It will weave together a large network of human knowledge and makes
this knowledge machine-processable. Various automated services will
help the users to achieve their goals by accessing and processing
information in machine-understandable form.
