Open
Knowledge Foundation launches German chapter
Dear
Reader!
At this year's Semantic
Web Day in Leipzig the German
chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation has been launched.
Its main objectives are to promote the idea of open knowledge by
organizing events and setting up projects that deal with the availability
and accessibility of open data and corresponding sources. One of
their current initiatives is to provide the
German version of CKAN (Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network),
an open registry for data and information provided mainly by governmental
bodies.
We wish OKF Germany all the best for its future activities and
are looking forward to give you regular updates about its progress
and initiatives.
With best regards,
Your Semantic Web Company

Facebook's
Like button ages Google overnight
Facebook's decision to change the “Fan” button to a
“Like” button, and to roll out the capability of placing
these buttons on ordinary non-Facebook web pages, has instantly
transformed the web. In the process, it has left Google's search
looking very vulnerable

Analyzes Social Network Sentiment With SPSS Modeler Upgrade
IBM has just released an upgrade to the SPSS predictive analytics
tool that will enable users to analyze text gathered from social
media sources, including Twitter, Facebook, blogs, wikis and RSS
feeds. The upgrade represents a considerable advance in the SPSS
Modeler data mining and text analytics solution with abilities that
stretch as far as detecting the context of the words used. Data
from the social web can also be merged with internal data to create
even more accurate intelligence about consumers, IBM says.

What is Open Graph?
Social networking site Facebook's latest API update, dubbed "Open
Graph," is generating diverse debate — about its genuine
"open"-ness, its impact on other web services, and (like
other Facebook initiatives before it) it's privacy and security
approach for users. Those issues can get conflated if not properly
addressed, however, so it is vital to take a close look at what
Open Graph is in order to make a solid critique.

Chem2Bio2RDF: a semantic framework for linking and data mining chemogenomic
and systems chemical biology data
Recently there has been an explosion of new data sources about genes,
proteins, genetic variations, chemical compounds, diseases and drugs.
Integration of these data sources and the identification of patterns
that go across them is of critical interest. Initiatives such as
Bio2RDF and LODD have tackled the problem of linking biological
data and drug data respectively using RDF

The free digital lunch is over. Now we pay with our lives
I'm an inveterate oversharer. I tweet what I eat, I blog my baby
photos, I check in on foursquare. It is second nature to me now.
But even early adopters didn't start out this way. Most of us are
resistant to new technology, and pick it up a few months, or years,
down the line, when it seems more mainstream and relevant –
and when friends seem to be using it. That never happened more dramatically
than with Facebook, which credits this "network effect"
for an exponential increase in users after its launch in 2004 to
the 500 million it is about to announce.

Tim
Berners-Lee: new Web tech will open new opportunities
Linked Data is a W3C-backed movement that is all about connecting
data sets across the Web. It can be viewed as a subset of the wider
Semantic Web movement, which is about adding meaning to the Web.
However, there is some confusion in the Semantic Web community about
the crossover. To add to the confusion, there is a term called 'Open
Data' that is being bandied around too. This commonly describes
data that has been uploaded to the Web and is accessible to all,
but isn't necessarily "linked" to other data sets.

Handbook of Semantic Web Technologies
After years of mostly theoretical research, Semantic Web Technologies
are now reaching out into application areas like bioinformatics,
eCommerce, eGovernment, or Social Webs. The need to leverage the
potential of combining information in a meaningful way in order
to be able to benefit from the Web will create further demand for
and interest in Semantic Web research.
