Dear reader! 2008 is just about to end, but looking back clearly reveals: it was an exciting year for the Semantic Web. Remember Yahoo's BOSS strategy and Search Monkey initiave, Microsoft's struggle over semantic search, the release of Calais, Cuil, Zemanta or Twine, the silent decline of Web 2.0 and the sudden appearance of a "Gimme-A-Break" Web 3.0 ... And what is to expect for 2009? Media industries and advertisers will jump on the Semantic Web, we will see a lot more of open data bubbles on the web, and smartly designed applications will bring "semantics to the home". And last but not least we hope to meet you at the first European Semantic Web Meet Up which will take place in Berlin, March 20, 2009. The Semantic Web: Semantics for Data and Services on the Web The authors Kashyap, Bussler, and Moran present the broad dimensions of this emerging Semantic Web and the multi-disciplinary technological underpinnings like machine learning, information retrieval, service-oriented architectures, and grid computing, thus combining the informational and computational aspects needed to realize the full potential of the Semantic Web vision. Bo Hu is a researcher with a focus on applications of Semantic Web
and Web 2.0 technologies in e-learning and e-healthcare. In this
interview, he talks about the potential of Semantic Web and intelligent
agent technologies in medicine and life sciences, a domain that
he describes as uncompared "in terms of the amount of data
to be processed, the diversity of data formats, and the time-critical
and safety-critical requirements." The interview was led by
Tassilo Pellegrini.

In autumn, SWC and Know-Center have joined forces with the work
group Corporate Semantic Web, Freie Universität Berlin, in the realization
of the Web Awareness Barometer 2008, a survey which aims to uncover
the current state of information and awareness regarding the uses
and areas of application of Social Software and Semantic Web technologies.
The 
Scientists at Toshiba's Corporate Research and Development Center,
in Japan have developed a system that offers shoppers advice on
what to buy based on the product barcode and the current weblog
buzz around the gadget. The team describes the system WOM Scouter
this month in the International Journal of Metadata, Semantics and
Ontologies.
Call it Web 3.0, the intelligent Web, or the semantic Web, the next
iteration of the cloud is all about extracting meaning from that
vast fogbank of unstructured content. To do that, many argue that
existing search technology just won't cut it. Behind the backdrop
of recent reports questioning if Microsoft will acquire Yahoo!'s
search business while also looking at revamping its own Live Search
technology, the company has numerous parallel efforts aimed at developing
new ways to improve the way users find information.

of OASIS Reference Model for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA-RM)
combining it with the key concepts of semantics that are relevant
for Semantically-enabling Service Oriented Architectures.

Freebase stores millions of entities and assertions about nearly
every topic one can ponder (thanks are owed to their seed dataset
– Wikipedia – and their amazing community). The amount
of information that Freebase stores is incredible, and is a testament
to what can be accomplished with the help of a dedicated community
and a little (or a lot) of clever software engineering.
What's the definition of optimism in these troubled times for the
hi-tech economy? How about starting a business which plans to take
on Google from a base in Mountain View, the search giant's home
town? Or maybe ploughing $20m into that business as an investor
