Microsoft`s
commercial interest in SPARQL
Dear
Reader!
Twitter revealed an interesting hint how Microsoft is embracing
the Semantic Web. Frank
van Harmelen dug out a document about Microsoft's attempt to
convert SPARQL queries into SQL queries. The abstract says:
"RDF store database designs and efficient techniques for converting
SPARQL queries to SQL queries are described that provide faster
triplet access, and which can reduce the computational overhead
and cost associated with storing large volumes of RDF metadata.
In various embodiments RDF data can be stored in de-normalized tables
tailored to provide efficient query and storage performance. The
provided query conversion techniques provide reliable and efficient
query performance."
While this development is a promissing sign to integrate Semantic
Web standards into established techology stacks we see a different
problematic development: the cited document is a patent
application at the USPTO. Whether you are a friend or foe of
software patenting it is an interesting indicator for the commercialization
of the Semantic Web.
With best regards,
Your Semantic Web Company

Jordan
S. Hatcher: "Why we can't use the same open licensing approach
for databases as we do for content and software."
Legal certainty is crucial when it comes to build business around
new technologies. The Open Knowledge Foundation has started to tackle
this problem with respect to Linked Data. Tassilo Pellegrini spoke
to the Open Content Lawyer Jordan S. Hatcher about licensing issues
in Open Data and got some practical advice to get started on a complex
but crucial topic.

Bernhard
Haslhofer: "Linked Data is an attempt to continue the well-established
information organization tools known in libraries."
Libraries have long been suspicious about the Semantic Web but latest
developments show that Linked Data paves the way for the adoption
of Semantic Web standards in the library domain. Andreas Blumauer
(SWC) talked to Bernhard Haslhofer from the University of Vienna
about the cautious, but promissing relationship between libraries
and the Semantic Web.

Manage
Metadata to Manage Your Business Better
As the volume of data in enterprises grows, so does the complexity
of managing it. Companies need visibility into all its data, including:
the types and amounts of data, where data resides across the organization,
how it is derived, how it flows from one system to another and where
end users consume data. IT organization can more effectively manage
its data-intensive business demands by harnessing the power of metadata
to acquire, discover, and validate all enterprise data and its relationships.

Digital
research institute announces €400,000 Enterprise of the Future
project
The Digital Enterprise Research Institute at NUI Galway has announced
a three-year Enterprise of the Future technology project, supported
by Cisco. The €400,000 project will develop new ways for the
Enterprise of the Future to integrate information and make it easily
accessible for employees. A typical company has information stored
across a variety of often unconnected formats including documents,
emails, instant messaging, and wiki pages. DERI’s semantic
search and integration technology will seek to more cleverly and
usefully link information and make it accessible across the company.

How Semantic Markup Helps Server-side Developers Write Reusable
Code
If only you could write every single line of code in your next project,
you’re certain it would be the cleanest, most maintainable
website on the Internet! But websites are rarely the sole products
of front-end developers, and in any project that involves a lot
of programmatic heavy-lifting it can be a struggle to instill an
appreciation for the benefits of a quality front-end codebase on
even the most quality-conscious server-side programmers. Too often,
what at first seems a minor instance of HTML semantics actually
involves quite a number of implications beyond what’s evident
to most people (including management and operations departments)
in most projects.

5 Reasons Why RSS Readers Still Rock
Recently I wrote about the decline of RSS Readers as a way for people
to keep up with news. I noted that while many people still use RSS
Readers, usage has decreased due to the emergence of real-time and
social flows of information via Twitter, Facebook and other such
services. The post sparked a fascinating discussion, with over 160
comments. What I learned from that discussion is that while the
RSS Reader market is indeed in decline, there are still a number
of compelling use cases for RSS Readers. Not to mention new tools
worth checking out. So in this more optimistic post, I list 5 reasons
why you should continue to use RSS Readers.

ranging from Apple Inc to Kansas to Williams College. Like the 5,000
person-name subject headings released last October, we have mapped
our latest crop of subject headings to DBpedia, Freebase and —
in the case of our geographic subject headings — GeoNames.

An
Orwellian world for Big Brother
The Council of Europe document ‘Internet Governance and critical
Internet resources’ states (p.7) that “ . . . the Internet
of Things refers to the seamless connection of devices, sensors,
objects, rooms, machines, vehicles, etc, through fixed and wireless
networks. Connected sensors, devices and tags can interact with
the environment and send the information to other objects through
machine-to-machine communication . . . The Semantic Web promotes
this synergy: even agents that where not expressly designed to work
together can transfer data among themselves when the data come with
semantics.”

Programming the Semantic Web
With this book, the promise of the Semantic Web -- in which machines
can find, share, and combine data on the Web -- is not just a technical
possibility, but a practical reality. Programming the Semantic Web
demonstrates several ways to implement semantic web applications,
using current and emerging standards and technologies. You'll learn
how to incorporate existing data sources into semantically aware
applications and publish rich semantic data.

3.0 Conference
January
26 - 18, 2010, St. Clara/ California
The
emergence of a new era of technologies, collectively known as Web
3.0, provides a strategically significant opportunity to make media
and business run better. Also known as the semantic web or linked
data, web 3.0 is a web in which data is linked to allow for more
meaningful, actionable insight to be extracted. At the conference,
we will explore how companies are using these technologies today,
and should be using them tomorrow, for significant bottom line impact
in areas like marketing, corporate information management, publishing,
customer service, and personal productivity.
