Ladder of Knowledge

Strategic partnership is aimed at the implementation of recent knowledge management and semantic technologies in the industry.

Press Information

Vienna/Graz, 6 February 2008 – Communication and networks are becoming increasingly important: Knowledge transfer is the key to a beneficial collaboration of industry and science. The strategic partnership of Semantic Web Company (SWC) and Know-Center pursues the aim of putting most recent insights and development in the area of knowledge management and semantic technology into practice.

With the beginning of 2008, SWC and Know-Center, the Austrian competence center for Knowledge Management, teamed up to form a strategic partnership whose aim is to further the development of scientific findings into marketable innovations and to close the gap between science and industry.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Tochtermann, head of Know-Center: "SWC has established itself as one of the leading companies in the area of semantic technologies. SWC maintains excellent relations with the national and international Semantic Web Community. We are using semantic technologies in a number of our projects, and there is a constant need for expert contacts, information about recent development and about the needs of companies. This explains why we are very keen on gaining a partner like SWC who is able to grant us access to these communities and to this type of information. There aren't many possible partners in Austria that have the competence and network to meet our needs - SWC is exactly the kind of partner we were looking for.“

„Service-oriented knowledge workplaces and combination of existing semantic and knowledge management technologies are the trends of the future.“

According to Prof. Tochtermann, there are two current scientific trends: on the one hand service-oriented knowledge workplaces, which generate added value through knowledge services and which increase productivity, and on the other hand a new combination of existing technologies that are going to launch a revolution in the area of knowledge development: information retrieval, data mining and semantic technologies that are able to automatically extract and comprehend information.

The experts at Semantic Web Company concur with Prof. Tochtermann's assessment. SWC Managing Director Andreas Blumauer: „The market is currently on the move, needs and demands change quickly and the demand for semantic web solutions is clearly increasing. We are receiving more enquiries and requests for consultation both from enterprises and smaller companies in Austria and from abroad. There is a need for semantic web training and an explicit demand in the project market. One of the most frequently expressed needs is the need  for more powerful search engines.“

Triple-I 2008: Call for Papers open until 14 April 2008

One of the activities that Know-Center Graz and SWC are embarking on together is the organization of the upcoming conference  Triple-I 2008 in Graz (September 3-5, 2008). Triple-I is a joint venture of three conferences, I-Know, I-Media and I-Semantics, thus reflecting the increasing importance and convergence of knowledge management, new media technologies and semantic systems.  The three corresponding conference calls are going to remain open until 14 April 2008.
